Lighting accounts for up to 14% of total electricity consumption for domestic properties and nearly half of electricity consumption in offices and public buildings. In the past lighting hasn’t been very energy efficient, but now that we are moving towards zero carbon buildings that has all changed. So what are the most popular options?

CFLs

Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) have a life of around 15,000 hours and can be used as replacements for many sources, including halogen spotlights and even high bay and flood lighting. Smaller versions are used in hotel rooms and other decorative lighting applications. When the energy-saving light bulbs were first introduced into the domestic market, many thought they were ugly and too big. Now these CFLs can be bought in all shapes and sizes, including dimmable.

LEDs

Light emitting diodes (LEDs) have grown in popularity and are now used in numerous applications such as display lighting, signs and traffic lights, vehicle indicators and brake lights plus more specialist areas such as theatre lighting. They have very low power consumption, switch on immediately and can be dimmed.
